Where Am I & Why Does It Matter? Augmented Reality Demonstrated.
Video Update: October 26, 2010The Getty Museum has introduced a new way to view art, augmented reality. As employed by The Getty, augmented reality creates 3D displays of art from printed PDF codes displayed in front of a webcam. The example that The Getty provides in the video below is a 3D display of one of the cabinets of curiosities created by Albert Janszoon Vinckenbrinck. If you want to try it for yourself after watching the video, the directions are available here.

Where you are now matters more than ever. Knowing where your friends are creates social connections in the wild, and beyond the digital bounds of social networking sites. Location-aware technologies that utilize the GPS capabilities of our phones will change the way we interact with one another, and how merchants and service providers compete for our attention within the immediate relevance of our proximity. It will be as easy as — scan, choose and go.
Location-aware technology is more than a game opportunity. It’s more than a promotion opportunity. Although the conventional marketers of day’s past may not agree as they’ll continue to drag archaic agency practices into a socially-driven environment. Why should location-aware technology be considered a companion to QR bar codes? Could augmented reality (AR) be among the reasons where a scan reveals an enhanced reality of location-based information and choice? Techcrunch recently reported that within 2009 over 1 million AR applications were downloaded. This is likely to increase beyond the projected 400 million downloads by 2014. For the consumer, merchants, or friends nearby, this heralds a future that will expose value and opportunity based upon personal preferences, time and place.
